Brewer to coach Post 64 baseball

Marietta Legion Post 64 Commander, Regis Kern, announced on Monday that

Marietta College head baseball coach, Brian Brewer, has been named head coach of the newly reformed Post 64 baseball team. The team will begin play this summer after a 13-year hiatus.

“We are really excited that Brian has accepted the position,” said Kern. “As we were developing our philosophies on how we wanted to do this, Brian’s name kept coming up. His ability to teach the game and mentor young men fits perfectly with our intentions.”

Kern consulted with the Marietta College NCAA compliance officer and assistant athletic director, Jeff Schaly, to be sure that Brewer was able, by the NCAA rules, to accept the position. Schaly filed an interpretation request with the NCAA who subsequently confirmed that Brewer could coach the team within the association’s bylaws.

For his part, Brewer consulted with his long-time friend and colleague in the game and head coach of Washington County’s other Legion team: Todd Engle of Beverly/Lowell Post 389/750. Brewer commented, “I’m excited to see American Legion Baseball return to Post 64 and equally excited to have a role in it’s return. I would like to thank the Beverly/Lowell program, specifically Todd Engle and Doug Wainwright, for what they have done for Washington County baseball during this extended absence. With them, I look forward to increasing the amount of opportunities our local players have to compete at this level.”

Brewer brings a nationally renowned coaching record to Post 64. As a player at Marietta he was an All-American in 1992. Between head coaching stints at John Carroll University in Cleveland and at MC, Brewer has won over 500 games in just 17 seasons, which is nearly 30 victories per year.

Brewer has taken MC to the four-team OAC tournament in each one of his 13 seasons. He’s been to 10 NCAA Regional Tournaments and four NCAA World Series, capturing national titles in 2006, 2011 and 2012. Under his tutelage, 10 former players have played professionally, including four who were drafted by Major League Baseball organizations.
