Warren falls to Point Pleasant, denied 1st win

VINCENT — There was a moment when it looked like Warren had a chance to stick with Point Pleasant Friday night.

It was at the end of an impressive 18-play, 68-yard drive that was capped by quarterback Ronnie Hill rushing seven yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. After Ethan Yost’s extra point, the Warriors (0-3) were within a touchdown and playing well.

But then it fell apart and the Big Black (2-1) rolled 40 unanswered points on their way to a 54-7 drubbing at Warren in a non-conference game.

“I was impressed with the 18-play drive, and I told them at halftime that we can do that,” said Warren coach Tim Carver. “We drove it straight down the field and we have to figure out a way to keep doing that.”

Hill led the Warriors in rushing with 37 yards on seven carries, while also completing 6 of 13 for 80 yards.

Point Pleasant actually scored on its first seven possessions behind the strong play of its junior quarterback Cason Payne.

“We’re blessed with having a great quarterback,” said Point Pleasant coach David Darst. “We knew we had a good offense this year, and we showed that tonight.”

The Big Blacks amassed 413 total yards, including 249 on the ground.

Payne got things going for Point Pleasant with a 14-yard TD run early in the first quarter. He also added a 33-yard scoring run when the Big Blacks added 26 points in the second quarter. Point Pleasant ran just 14 offensive plays while scoring 40 points in the half.

“We’re very pleased with a win on the road against an old SEOAL rival,” Darst said.

Justin Brumfield led Point Pleasant in rushing with just three carries for 77 yards, including touchdown runs of 11 and 62.

Payne also threw an 87-yard pass to Josh Wamsley with one minute to play in the first half. Those two also hooked up for an 18-yard TD pass in the third quarter.

Point Pleasant’s defense also scored a touchdown when Jovone Johnson intercepted a Hill pass and returned it 25 yards.

“It was tough to stay with them because we are young and still learning,” Carver said. “It’s been the same thing week after week so far.”

It won’t get any easier for Warren as the Warriors travel to take on Fort Frye in Beverly at 7 p.m. Friday.
