Williamstown sweeps single-A track regional

JAY W. BENNETT The Marietta Times Williamstown sophomore Dakota Scott went 38-9.5 to finish fifth place in the shot put at Friday's Class A, Region IV track meet at the Erickson All-Sports Facility. The Yellowjacket will await his fate of making the state meet as an at-large qualifier.

PARKERSBURG — Williamstown’s track program put on a dominating effort for boys head coach Jill Bryant and girls head man Zach Hall here Friday evening at the Class A, Region IV, championships held inside the Erickson All-Sports Facility.

The Williamstown girls posted 201 points to finish well ahead of runner-up Buffalo (104). The Yellowjacket boys were pushed by Ravenswood (146.5 to 111.5) as Wirt County tallied 69 points to garner third.

Senior Casey Stanley had Wirt County’s only win, which also established a Tiger school record in the shot put (44-1.5). Aside from champion WHS and Ravenswood, the only other area Little Kanawha Conference individual winner was Calhoun County’s Ben Frederick, who took first in the high jump with an effort of 5 feet, 10 inches.

Ravenswood’s boys actually had three of the top performers in the regional thanks to Blake Jarrell (32.5), Austin Garrett (28.5) and Bryce Jarrell (28.5). Sherman’s Elijah Deboard tallied 30 points. He had victories in the 100 (11.52), 200 (23.82) and by going 19 feet, 9 inches to win the long jump, where ‘Jacket Mikey Bell placed third and punched his ticket to next week’s state meet in Charleston.

When coach Hall was asked if he had any thoughts on the evening he replied, “survive and advance. Emmy Strauss in the 300 (hurdles with a winning effort of 47.72) just went from tenth to second in the state. We competed.

“Emmy, by far, that was a really good surprise. Kendall Miller in the pole vault jumping 8-2 (and winning). That came out of nowhere. She was a 7-footer. It’s real good. We are peaking at the right time. One week of rest and then the big show next weekend.”

The only other pole vaulter for the girls was Wahama’s MacKenzie Barr, who went 7 feet, 10 inches.

Parkersburg Catholic’s Aaliyah Brunny led all females with 34 points. She was runner-up to Strauss in the 300 hurdles and topped ‘Jacket Shyla Watson in the 100 hurdles (16.79 to 17.65). Brunny also posted the best effort (15-8.25) in the long jump.

Williamstown teammates Lilly McMullen (32.5) and Ella Hesson (30) as well as Buffalo’s Jillian King (28) followed Brunny as the top performers. McMullen swept the sprint events taking gold in the 100 (13.21), 200 (26.74) and 400 (1:00.28). Hesson also was a triple-winner besting the field in the 800 (2:25.52), 1600 (5:21.22) and 3200 (12:16.16). King’s victory came in the high jump. She went 5-2, but ‘Jackets Carsen Hesson and Jillian Leo advanced by placing second and third, respectively.

The Yellowjackets also went one-two in the discus (Brianna Kendall, 106-9; Elizabeth Newton, 101-6) and the shot put (Bethany Arnold, 35-7.5; Kendall, 32-5.5). Tiger Alexis Petrovsky was third with a heave of 100 feet, 5 inches in the discus.

Wahama’s quartet of Skylar Riffle, Barr, Kaleigh Stewart and Camryn Tyree clocked in at 57.86 to win the 4×100.

The other four relays were won by WHS. In the 4×200, Watson, Carsen Hesson, Kenzie Hill and Strauss posted a 1:55.49. McMullen, Sydney Zide, Strauss and Carsen Hesson went 4:21.23 to win the 4×400. In the 4×800, it was Carsen Hesson, Tessie Wells, Zide and Wager crossing in 10:43.04. Watson, Miller, Hill and Strauss comprised the victorious shuttles squad (1:14.33).

In the boys pole vault, Williamstown’s Colin Hunkele (9-6) and Caden Tallman (8-6) took the top two spots. Aside from Deboard, the only other non-LKC individual event winner was Tide teammate Tommy Harper, who went 144-3 in the discus. Sherman’s Ian Beller (128-6) was runner-up and Parkersburg Catholic’s Jalen Brunny (116-8) placed third.

The Jarrell twins were pushing each other the entire meet, but Bryce’s lone win came in the 2-mile as Blake’s 10:35.67 was a tenth of a second too slow and he took runner-up. Blake did post narrow wins versus his sibling in the 800 (2:06.94 to 2:07.27) and the 1600 (4:40.91 to 4:41.16).

Wirt County had solid showings in the hurdles, but Yellowjacket Bradey Fayad finished first in the 110 (16.98) and the 300 (42.04). Tiger Justin Rood was second in the 300 hurdles while Joey Schmidt of the orange and black was third in each.

The Red Devil Garrett, who was chased down by Deboard at the finish line in the 200, had more than enough to win the 400. The Red Devil clocked in at 52.48 and was followed by Rood and Williamstown’s Dawson Reynolds.
