Full prep football slate tonight

It’s still hot outside, but the high school football season is upon us.

Williamstown and Parkersburg High may have kicked it off Thursday night, but tonight practically everybody else in the Mid-Ohio Valley will be in action on the gridiron.

Marietta, 5-5 last year, heads up Ohio 60 to McConnelsville to kick off its season against Morgan, and Warren, 0-10 last fall, hopes to turn around its fortunes this season with a newcomer in Dan Day at the helm of the Warriors, who make a short jaunt to The Plains to do battle with the Athens Bulldogs.

In a Division VII, Region 27 playoff rematch from last season, Eric McCutcheon-coached Waterford welcomes Sciotoville East to town looking for payback from last year’s 16-8 first-round loss.

In Pioneer Valley Conference action, Russ Morris-led Frontier is at Shenandoah while Caldwell travels to Buckeye Trail.

Defending PVC champion Fort Frye, coached by Eric Huck, is looking for its fourth straight playoff appearance this season and starts off with a road game against Belpre. Under the guidance of a new head coach in Mike DeVol, a veteran football mentor throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley, the Golden Eagles welcome the Cadets to Ralph Holder Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, Federal Hocking is at Alexander in the Lancers’ annual rivalry season opener and Eastern tangles with Huntington Ross from Chillicothe in the Eagles’ lidlifter at home.

Lance Binegar’s Parkersburg Catholic gridders, who suffered through a winless season last fall, are off to face Paden City on the road.

Jodi Mote and his St. Marys Blue Devils, who finished as the West Virginia Class A state runner-ups last year, are off this week and will kick off their season in week 2, hosting Scott next Friday night.
