’Jackets ready for Fenton Shootout

WILLIAMSTOWN–The Fenton Shootout is a small tournament that goes back all the way to 1985.

“When we took over the program we only won about 50 games in 8 years,” said Williamstown girls coach Fred Sauro. “We wanted to see if we could play against some of the best teams in the state. So in December of 1995 we called it the Yellowjacket shootout.”

In 2003 the competition changed its name to the Fenton Shootout to honor Yellowjackets basketball player Grier Fenton’s father, who passed away at the age of 53. The Fenton Shootout has been going on ever since.

The tournament is another opportunity for Sauro and his basketball team to test their skills against teams from all over the state.

“The first year we did it we made it to the state tournament.” said Sauro. “The goal for us is that this is a gauge for the rest of the season. If we do happen to play well then there’s a good chance we can do well against wheeling central.”

The Fenton Shootout will actually be the season opener for the Williamstown girls. Their schedule was adjusted due to the Yellowjacket football team making it to the state single-A state tournament this year.

“By the time we play we would’ve had 23 practices,” said Sauro. “The kids are ready to play. In the offseason I think we’re the only team that played the single-A state champion and the double-A champion. I think it helps.”

There will be two varsity games happening today at the Williamstown’s high school gym. Poca will be playing Wheeling Central at 6 p.m. today to open things up. Then at around 7:30 p.m., Clay County’s girls will go up against Williamstown’s. On Saturday at 11 a.m., the junior varsity teams will play and that will be followed by the varsity consolation game at 12:30 p.m. The championship game is expected to begin around 2:30 p.m. with the two winners of the varsity matchups playing each other.

“We’ve had some kids play very well in the preseason.” said Sauro. “We just want to play and the way we play is really fast.”
