FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Alexis Enochs scored a career-high 22 points leading the Marietta College women’s basketball team to a 64-56 win over Coe (Iowa) College Friday afternoon in the Cruzin Classic.

The Pioneers head into the holiday break with a 7-3 overall record. Coe fell to 6-4 on the season.

“This was a great win to end our trip on. We really locked them down in the first half and defended the 3-point line the entire game,” Marietta head coach Kole Vivian said. “Alexis was great finishing inside and her teammates set her up for great opportunities. And Corrie (Burkhardt) made a big play every time we needed one.”

Both teams got off to a slow start on offense as the game was tied, 4-4, four minutes into the first period. Bailee Brooks scored on a fast break layup to give Marietta the lead, 6-4, at the 5:16 mark. The Pioneers never trailed in the game.

Marietta’s defense held Coe scoreless for more than four minutes but managed just five points of its own during the same stretch and led 9-4. Shay Lett drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to maintain MC’s five-point lead, 14-9, after the first quarter.

The Pioneer offense started to get rolling in the second quarter, while Coe’s struggles continued. Marietta outscored the Kohawks 19-8 in the second period and took a 33-17 lead into halftime.

Coe turned the tables on the Pioneers in the third quarter outscoring Marietta 22-11 to cut the deficit to five, 44-39, heading into the fourth quarter. MC was whistled for eight fouls in the third period and the Kohawks converted 11-of-12 free throws to get back into the game.

The Kohawks scored first in the final period cutting the Marietta lead to three, 44-41. But the Pioneers responded with a jumper from Enochs and a 3-pointer from Lett to push the margin back to eight, 49-41, three minutes into the quarter.

While Enochs and Lett were getting the job done on offense, the senior Burkhardt was causing Coe problems on defense. Burkhardt notched four of her career-high eight steals in the fourth quarter thwarting any chances of a Kohawk comeback.

In addition to the 22 points from Enochs, Lett drained a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 16 points. Burkhardt chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds and the eight steals.

Jackie Feldt led Coe with 22 points. Sydney Schroder added 10 points and six rebounds, while Madeline Wilkins finished with nine points.

For the game, Marietta shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the floor, 23.5 percent (4-of-17) from 3-point range and 71.4 percent (10-of-14) at the free throw line. The Kohawks were 18-of-51 (35.3 percent) from the floor, 2-of-16 (12.5 percent) behind the arc and 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) at the line.

The Pioneers edged Coe on the glass, 35-33. Both teams turned the ball over 25 times.

Marietta will take a week off for Christmas before jumping back into Ohio Athletic Conference action. The Pioneers host rival Muskingum University at 7 p.m. next Saturday.
