’Jackets cruise past Ritchie

WILLIAMSTOWN — Williamstown got a much-needed win snapping a two-game losing streak, by putting up 100 points against Ritchie County in a 100-58 win Tuesday.

While Williamstown head coach Scott Sauro was battling ill-like symptoms during the game, the Yellowjackets had six players with double figures in points led by Cullen Cutright’s game-high 26. Isaac Cutright and Trent Lynch both had 12 points, with Lynch producing off the bench.

“Scoring balance was awesome tonight, that’s what happens when you move the ball around and get easy shots.” said Williamstown assistant coach Ross Mullenix. “If we do that, more guys can score.” Eleven came from Boston Caruthers and Baylor Haught and Xavier Caruthers both with 10.

Williamstown (11-2) used a balance attack of the post and perimeter in scoring 100. The hosts made a total of nine 3s and scored 42 points in the paint.

“Staying aggressive the entire game was worked on coming off two straight losses, tonight’s performance proved that it was job well done. We want to play up-tempo the entire game,” added Mullenix

“In our losses we played well early but then we backed off. So we want to play up-tempo the entire game and we did that, our energy was great.”

Williamstown started aggressive by opening up the first by its first 12 points in the paint.

Lay-ins by Cullen Cutright, Isaac Cutright, Boston Caruthers and Eli Inman using a back door cut to get an easy lay-in.

Xavier Caruthers hit a deep 3 and Cullen Cutright scored five points as Williamstown went on a 15-2 run, putting the game out of reach with a 17-point lead.

Two coming from deep, Trent Lynch put up nine points in the second, while Cullen Cutright swiped and scored two times and converted a three-point play in back-to-back possesions. Cutright scored 21 of his game-high 26 points in the first half.

James scored seven points, and had a total of 14 points, making the score 55-28 at half. Scoring in the third was Gavin Bosgraf with seven points and four by both Xavier Caruthers and Isaac Cutright.

Garret Hill used a nice pass fake to Bosgraf, to get much needed space to pull off a 360 layup was the highlight of the third. Williamstown used the fourth testing out different lineups and getting some experience for youngsters.

Haught chipped in with four and a 3 from Boston Caruthers and Lynch. Graden McKinney made two from 3, as he scored eight out of his 12 points in the final quarter. Trey Landis’ lay-in during the final minutes finally got Williamstown its 100th point.

Coming off two losses this was a much needed win for Williamstown, getting some much needed momentum for its upcoming games.

“We needed this win, this as a springboard for us,” said Mullenix, who will be with the ‘Jackets Thursday when they invade rival Parkersburg Catholic. “We got a rough couple games coming up, with Catholic and Wheeling Central.”
