Marietta softball splits twinbill

KISSIMMEE, Fla. — The Marietta College softball team split its doubleheader on Friday against Wisconsin Lutheran College and St. Joseph’s College.

The Pioneers fell to the Warriors 10-0 in five innings, but bounced back in the second game to defeat the Golden Eagles, 8-3. With the split, Marietta is 7-3 on the season.

In game one, the Warriors jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After a scoreless second and third inning, Wisconsin-Lutheran tacked on a pair of runs in the fourth and fifth to win the game, 10-0.

The second game started with three scoreless innings before the Pioneers scored three runs in the top of the fourth. Ashton Hemlke led off the inning with a single, later Erin Miller reached base safely, and a Reagan Tom single loaded the bases. Lauren Rockocy delivered a two run single over the left fielders head. Later in the inning with the bases still load Maicy Kirk drew a walk which plated Tom, to make the score 3-0 in favor of Marietta.

The Pioneers added to their lead with a four run top of the fifth inning. Helmke led off the inning as she reached on an error, and Alderson followed up with a single to drive in Kylie Daughetry who pinch ran for Helmke. The second run of the inning came off a Britnee Kail single that plated Taylor Watts. The final two runs of the inning scored when Alyssa Cook reached on an error, and put Marietta up 7-0.

The Pioneers added a run in the top of the seventh when Kail singled to left field to drive home Tom, who singled down the left field line to lead off the inning. The Golden Eagles tried to rally with three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Marietta won, 8-3.

Maddi Liston started and pitched six and a third strong innings. Liston cruised through six innings as she allowed no runs on five hits, and struck out four. Liston allowed three runs on eight hits, and struck out four to earn her second win of the season.

Marietta wraps up its trip to Florida Saturday when it plays the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and the University of Dubuque, with game one scheduled for 9:15 a.m.
