A very Merry-Etta: Beloved annual tree lighting ceremony held Saturday

The spirit of the season was alive as Marietta hosted its annual tree lighting ceremony, a beloved community tradition affectionately known as Merry-etta’s Tree Lighting Ceremony.

Residents and visitors gathered on the lawn of the armory to usher in the holidays with music, dance, and, of course, the lighting of the grand Christmas tree.

A vibrant performance from the Marietta Dance Academy (MDA) highlighted the evening’s festivities. Emilee Edwards, a parent of an MDA student, praised the group and the academy’s dedication to fostering community and positivity was evident as their students lit up the stage with enthusiasm and talent.

“It’s the most wonderful, supportive environment, and also very classy,” said Edwards.

For many, the evening was a long-awaited return to the spotlight for MDA. According to Edwards, it’s been many years since the dance academy performed at the ceremony, noting how the event rotation gives different groups a chance to showcase their talents.

The event also featured warm beverages served near the armory and heartfelt acknowledgments of key contributors such as Dana Herman, chair of the Hometown Holidays Committee.

Music filled the air as children and adults joined in for festive songs, including a spirited rendition of “Frosty the Snowman.” The community’s collective joy crescendoed as the countdown to the tree lighting began.

As the countdown reached zero, the Christmas tree was illuminated, bathing the lawn in a magical glow. Families celebrated with photos, and children gazed at the dazzling display.

“Merry-etta’s Tree Lighting captures the heart of this community,” attendee Jules Miller said. “It’s about coming together, celebrating the season, and supporting the incredible talent we have here.”

The night concluded with a heartfelt rendition of “We Wish You a Merry Christmas”, leaving everyone with warm spirits and holiday cheer. Once again, Marietta’s cherished tradition united the community in celebration.
