WASHINGTON W.Va. -- Three people were transported to a local hospital and then taken to a Pittsburgh hospital for further evaluation following a Thursday incident at Chemours' Washington Works site.

According to a statement from the company, at approximately 3:30 p.m. Thursday three Chemours employees performing routine maintenance procedures may have been exposed to PFIB (perfluoroisobutene), a byproduct chemical created as part of the company's manufacturing process.

The employees were treated on-site by the company medical team and transferred by ambulance to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center for evaluation. They were later transferred to the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center for further evaluation.

"We are thankful for the quick response of our on-site team. This incident was contained on-site, and there is no ongoing release or off-site impacts to our community," the statement said. "Our primary focus right now is on the safety and well-being of our employees, and we are committed to supporting our employees and their families in this process. We are in the process of conducting our investigation into the incident cause."

No further information was available Thursday evening.
