John E. Herlan
John E. Herlan 84, Newport, OH, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2024, at his home surrounded by family. Born in Newport, OH, on October 27, 1939, he was a son of the late Joseph Raymond and Edith Eddy Herlan. He was a 1958 graduate of Newport High School and was a U.S. Army Veteran. He worked for the Quaker State Oil Refinery for 30 years, and later worked for DJA Oil Inspection for many years. He was a Newport Trustee for 20 years. John enjoyed the youth in the community coaching youth softball and helping coach at Frontier High School. He enjoyed attending all his grandchildren’s sporting events and enjoyed traveling to Indiana to visit his grandkids. He was an avid Cincinnati Reds fan.
He is survived by his wife of 13 years, Charlotte Swingler Hearn Herlan; one daughter Johnna Sue Herlan Carre; six grandchildren, Eleanor (Aaron) Yoder, Jack Carre, Landon Carre, Christy (Andrew) Wright, Samantha (Chris) Bucon, and Josey Jones; three great- grandchildren, Jaxon and Jace Wright, and Colby Bucon; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Sue Dee Hoff Herlan; daughter, Lori Lynn Jones; son-in-law, Kenneth Lee Jones; two brothers, Ronald and Robert Herlan; and sisters, Donna Hearn, and Helen Farson.
Services will be held Monday, January 8, 2024, at 2 P. M. at the Ingram Funeral Home in St. Marys, WV, with Lloyd Westbrook officiating. Interment will be in the Newport Cemetery, Newport, OH, with military graveside rites. Friends may call from 2 to 4 P.M. and 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday and 1 to 2 P. M. Monday at the funeral home.
