WILLIAMSTOWN --Administrators, teachers, students and community members were greeted by a performance from the Williamstown String Program and fresh pastries from the First Floor Bakery as they arrived at Williamstown Middle/High School Monday for the second of three LSIC (Local School Improvement Council) Showcase events.
These showcase events allow schools to show what their staff and students have been working on this school year.
STEAM Club Director Laura Maidens, along with STEAM Club member Luke Seago, were on hand to talk about the projects they have been working on.
Seago demonstrated a battery powered car that can be programmed to move in certain directions based on the color of the pad the car crosses. A blue pad would cause the car to turn right, a pink pad left and a purple pad would cause the car to do a 360 spin.
"That's my favorite one," Seago said.
He also showed guests his stop animation project he completed for STEAM Club. He said he took almost 300 pictures to create his 43-second video.
Maidens said students also learned about parade balloons for their Balloons Over Broadway project. She said students learned about the history of parade balloons and then used a "bee-bot" to help them code a route a balloon would take through the city during a parade.
Maidens said this is the third year of the club and that they meet for one hour after school every week. She said she hopes this program will one day be implemented into the regular curriculum.
Sarah Nisewarner, Williamstown Middle/High School science department chair, talked to guests about how they use chicken eggs, and later live chickens, to study the development of embryos and genetics. Students helped to incubate and hatch some chicks that Nisewarner said they will now match to pictures of grown chickens to see the effects of genetics. She also told guests about the West Virginia Garden Challenge which provides free seeds to anyone in West Virginia who fills out a short survey. The next LSIC event is scheduled for Thursday at 6 p.m. and will take place at Parkersburg High School. The vent is open to the public.
