60th: Norman and Dorothy Wilkinson
Norman and Dorothy (Ullmann) Wilkinson celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Aug. 15, 2018. They were married at First Christian Church in Lowell by George Koch in 1958. The couple met in the third grade at Lower Salem Elementary School. Dorothy says that she “didn’t like him much then.” Norman was a member of the Rocket Club and on the Salem Liberty Cardinals basketball team in high school; also, he and Dorothy were both drummers in the band. Dorothy was the Salutatorian of her class, and both of them graduated from Salem Liberty High School.
Norm and Dorothy are members of the 6th & Washington Streets Church of Christ. Nothing is more precious to them than serving the Lord, but their biggest fun in life is the fair and also talking to folks at Wal-Mart, or McDonald’s, or Captain D’s, or Burger King. Dorothy is also known by children everywhere she goes as the “candy lady.”
Norman worked for 42 years at the Airolite Company, after he worked at the old Pure Oil station at Second and Greene, and is now happily retired. He is the son of William (Bill) Wilkinson and Helen (Warren) Wilkinson of Lower Salem, both deceased. His siblings were Warren (Betty Jane) Wilkinson of Marathon, Florida, and Jane (Sam) Eldridge of Ephrata, Washington, who have also predeceased him.
Dorothy is retired from the Big Bear Stores company where she worked following the Ohio Bureau of Unemployment Compensation and B.F. Goodrich. Many children also remember her as their beloved Tuesday School teacher at 6th and Washington. She is the daughter of Harry E. and Frederica (Payne) Ullmann of Lower Salem, Ohio, also both deceased. Her siblings were Caroline (Andrew) Brackenridge, Wayne (Annabelle) Ullmann, Daniel (Shirley) Ullmann, Gertrude (Lloyd) Reed, Gladys (Corwin) Bowen, and her surviving sister, Mildred (Donald) McCain.
They have two daughters, Cindy (Jerard) Smith and Kim (Zach) Van Tassel.
They also have four grandchildren, Bill (Lydia) Van Tassel, Ben (Brandie) Van Tassel, Lexi Smith, and Logan Smith.
“Unkie” Norm and Aunt “Dorsey” also have tons of nieces and nephews.
