Thanksgiving conversations

By Patrick Ward 2 min read

As your family and friends gather around the table this Thanksgiving --

"We don't gather around the table."

Oh, okay, how do you celebrate? Don't you sit around a table and eat turkey?

"No. We get a plate and watch the game."

Isn't there some talking that happens between people on Thanksgiving?

"Yeah, I guess so."

Okay, then.

If there is a time when conversation is happening on Thanksgiving I encourage you to pick a few of these questions that are focused on gratitude. Since this is a special day of giving thanks, it might be nice to think and talk about gratitude and thankfulness. So try some of these conversation starters:

1. What situations make you feel thankful?

2. Who has been especially helpful in your life in the last year?

3. Where can you help people more?

4. What is something that your parents did that annoyed you at the time, but you have now grown to appreciate?

5. How do you show appreciation?

6. Compliment the person across or beside you.

7. Share a challenge you've faced for which you are grateful.

8. What does practicing gratitude mean to you?

9. How do you feel when you receive a compliment?

10. Describe three qualities you appreciate about yourself.

11. What are the little things that make you feel grateful?

12. If this were your last moment on earth, what would stand out in your mind as most important?

13. What do you appreciate about some family member that isn't able to be with you today?

Happy Thanksgiving!
