Thanksgiving is just around the corner and everyone is getting ready for one of the country's biggest celebrations that gives us a chance to give thanks for all our good fortunes. At the same time, it gives us the opportunity to teach our children why we celebrate Thanksgiving and the true meaning besides school being closed.
It is a time for families to get together with all the traditional Turkey, dressing and extra yummy dishes and desserts that we do not have normally daily.
I know teachers try their best to teach our children about all the important holidays and the true meanings. However, we as parents also need to reinforce just how proud and fortunate we are to live in America.
America is the land of opportunities and many children leave their families and countries and go through difficult times to come here for a better life.
For example, back in the early 1900s, my father-in- law left Greece at the age of 13 never to see his family again. But through hard work and dedication became very successful American citizen.
Children need to know how very lucky and fortunate they are and also need to be caring, loving, and THANKFUL for all our wonderful country provides.
We as parents need to teach and instruct our children to share, be considerate of others, give to others and be good citizens.
I think it is very important that we all need to emphasize the meaning of giving especially on the special day coming up.
Ask your children what they are thankful for and have them make a list and parents add anything they may forget.
(Such as religion, family, country, health, food to eat, etc). It is very sad but there are many who are not able to have all the luxuries as others and you should reach out to help them. What better time than this Thanksgiving? It sets a great example for your children.
May all of you be blessed and thankful this holiday season.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
