Ohio’s education future is on the line

As a councilwoman and a parent, I’ve learned how decisions made in Columbus—and even in Washington—don’t stay there. They reach into our neighborhoods and communities in ways that are often overlooked. I see how state and federal policy directly impacts public services at the local level, including the systems that support our children and their education. That’s why I’m alarmed by two changes that could reshape the landscape of education in Ohio: the centralization of power under Senate Bill 1 (SB 1) and the growing momentum to convert federal education funding into ...

Teaching children to laugh in life

Laughter is one of the most successful defenses that mankind has found to cope with the problems of daily living. All of us must teach our children to laugh. In turn, they will mature into adults prepared to teach others the significance of laughter. Thus, I want to address my thoughts on the importance of humor in the home, at school, during athletic competition, and on the job. Carefully consider the following: Humor in the Home An essential element to the success of any family unit is that intangible state of mind known as “happiness.” If the mother, father, and/or ...

The meaning of Easter

As we are getting closer to one of the biggest religious holidays (Easter) we need to take the time to talk to our children about the real meaning of Easter and what took place and why we celebrate Easter. Children look forward to the Easter holiday and all the Easter Bunny chocolate eggs and baskets that the Easter Bunny delivers on that special Sunday. I personally believe that the Easter season is the most important holiday and event for the year where we celebrate the death and resurrection of our lord and savior Jesus. With his death and resurrection it has provided a pathway ...

“Do I not destroy my enemies when I make them my friends?”

Last week’s Presidential Address to Congress was a disappointment. Shame on President Trump, who acted anything but “presidential.” With the opening lines of his speech, Trump began to taunt the Democrats. He opined that President Biden was “the worst President in American history,” a thought that didn’t need to be shared. Trump later paused to remark that no matter what he said, no Democrat would ever applaud his words. In a speech that could have pointed America toward unity in solving our common problems, the President picked a fight. Shame on the Democrats who joined ...

The Tin Cup Militia and Fried Chicken

Marietta has been spared the horrors of war. War came close when Confederate General John Hunt Morgan led 2,500 cavalry on a daring raid through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio. Raiders entered Ohio near Cincinnati on July 13, 1863. Days later they were streaking through the state towards the ...

MOV Climate Corner: Ban the brine

On the increasingly rare occasions when this old lady has to drive in the winter, I try to wait until after the road-clearing crews and salt trucks have done their work. Since moving to Ohio more than forty years ago, I have developed a true appreciation for these winter warriors who do so much to make the roads safer for the rest of us. Unfortunately, in Ohio, some of those road-clearing trucks may well be spraying oilfield brine. Plain brine, of course, is salt water, and we are all familiar with salt’s ice-melting properties. Oilfield brine, unfortunately, is not just salt and ...
