Warren BOE awards contracts

By Michele Newbanks 4 min read

VINCENT -- General contracts for multiple building projects were awarded during Monday night's meeting of the Warren Local Schools Board of Education.

Elementary school demolition

A resolution passed awarding contracts for the demolition of Little Hocking and Warren elementaries to Raze International Inc. of Shadyside.

The contract for the Little Hocking school demolition was $325,190, while the former Warren Elementary will be torn down at a cost of $202,190.

"They will start that process Jan. 1. They've been on site already getting prepared," said Superintendent Kyle Newton. "They're ready to go. I know they're going to be working on that right away."

He said this was the company's winter project and he knows they're excited about having the work to keep their people employed all winter long.

Substantial completion of work is to be done by April 1.

Warren Middle School

A contract for the middle school addition and renovation was awarded to R.W. Setterlin Building Company of Columbus with a base bid of $6.484 million.

The bid also included alternates totaling $408,947, which included $234,564 for technology equipment and almost $75,000 for asphalt.

The resolution awarding the contract noted the technology equipment and asphalt alternates would be co-funded by the Ohio Facilities Construction Commission.

"Their project work will start essentially as soon as they can, but Feb. 1 is the start date," Newton explained. "We will probably see them start having their trailers and stuff like that sooner than that. If the weather stays good in January, I bet they'll move stuff in in January so that they're ready to go."

He said the timeline for the work on the middle school is tight, with an addition and renovations to the main building. He said there will be a big push to get things done this summer.

A major part of the work will be a new gymnasium.

"That gym is huge when looking at the percentage of the building," Newton said.

There was discussion on the removal of the entire portico in front of the middle school. It is one of the alternates included on the contractor's bid, with a cost of $23,243 for the demolition.

"They've taken out the portico and only have it perpendicular to the building," Newton explained, as he showed illustrations of the school's renovations. "We're getting prices so that that piece can stay and then have it re-roofed and have drainage put in. Obviously all new blacktop underneath it."

Board member Sid Brackenridge asked why leave part of the portico instead of taking it all out.

Board President Bob Crum said they had requests from teachers to keep part of it so the kids can be out of the rain.

"Rather than take it completely away, they asked that if part of it could be left, that would be great so they'd have a place to get in out of the rain when they are waiting to go in," Crum said.

Newton said pick up and drop off is now at the back of the building, so he didn't have an issue with removing the entire thing.

"We can remove it. Right now, our price is to remove the whole thing, but we can also leave that piece," he said.

Warren High School

The substantial completion for the new high school remains July 2021.

In the high school, interior painting has started, including the ceiling of the gym.

"Which is so funny, because at the elementary school, it was like 'oh, school's going to start next week and we're painting the ceiling in the gym,'" Newton said. "It's December and we're painting the ceiling in the gym so that just tells you how far ahead and how this is just set up for things to happen at the right time."

He noted instead of December, windows will be installed in late January, as some had to be custom-made.

Stadium improvements

A notice of intent was also passed for stadium improvements. The resolution said a contract will be entered into with The Motz Group of Cincinnati for any project involving improvements to the stadium field/track and supporting infrastructure on or before March 1.

The improvements would take place this spring and summer. The contract will be finalized as the project date gets closer, Newton said.

The stadium, which is under design, will include a track, synthetic athletic field, lights, away bleachers, throwing area, concession and restroom building and concourse, according to the school's community update.

Starting at /week.
