Wolf Creek BOE hears teacher survey results

WATERFORD — The Wolf Creek Local Board of Education was apprised of results from a recent teacher survey during Monday evening’s meeting.

Sara Beardsley and Sharon Baumgard, co-presidents of the Wolf Creek Local Education Association, said 45 of the 53 members of the organization responded to the survey, which asked questions about COVID-19 and virtual learning.

The survey showed:

¯ 77 percent of members were satisfied with the communication from building leadership;

¯ 65.9 percent were either quite or somewhat concerned about students’ social-emotional well-being right now;

¯ 31.1 percent felt a moderately negative effect due to the current learning model.

Teacher comments regarding students’ well-being included students are anxious, need more information about routines and need security in knowing what is next.

“The students I work with, I think that’s primo,” said Beardsley about students’ anxiety.

Staff well-being was also discussed, as one of the write-in answers was the teacher felt stressed because of students missing work due to quarantine.

“The part that stresses me the most is trying to keep track of when students are absent/quarantined and exactly what they missed,” the teacher wrote. “A lot of students who have been quarantined simply do not do any work while they are quarantined, even though I have tried everything to communicate with them and taken work to the office.”

The teacher said it was very frustrating because they do a lot of extra work, but get nothing back from students.

Beardsley said she’s heard a lot of voices about reset, which will allow for only virtual learning until Jan. 11. It will let students and staff quarantine for 14 days after Christmas, in case of a surge in positive cases after family gatherings for the holidays.

In other board news:

¯ Hugh Arnold was voted president pro tem until the organizational meeting in January.

¯ Annual evaluations for Rachel Miller, district treasurer, and Doug Baldwin, superintendent, were held during an executive session after the meeting.

¯ The next board meeting will be held after the organizational meeting at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 4 at the Waterford High School library.
