Dog licensing requirements extended to July 1

Dog owners will have extra time to get their dog tags this year.
Washington County Auditor Matthew Livengood said House Bill 404 "extended the deadline for pretty much every license, to include dog tags."
The deadline to purchase dog tags is now July 1.
Livengood said a tag has to be purchased within 30 days of getting a dog or within 30 days after a dog turns 3 months old.
Ohio Revised Code 955.01 states that if an application is not filed and registration fee paid, the auditor shall assess a penalty in an amount equal to the registration fee for one year on the dog's owner.
A dog can be licensed for one year, three years, or permanently.
For a new license, the cost for a one-year license is $16. The cost for three years is $48 and a permanent license is $160.
If purchased online, there are credit card surcharges, Livengood said. The fee for the one year license is $2.25, for a total fee of $18.25; for three years is $3.75 for a total fee of $51.75; and for the permanent license, the fee is $10.25, for a total fee of $170.25.
A renewed license is the same cost as the one year license fee.
He said there are several ways for a dog owner to purchase the license. They can mail in the application, visit the auditor's office in the Washington County Courthouse, file online or purchase the license through the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.
If the tags are bought through mail or online, they will be mailed back. A $1 fee is assessed per order for postage.
"We ask when they mail it in to include a self-addressed stamped envelope with two forever stamps," Livengood explained.
The post office can't process the tags through their machine, they have to be done by hand, which costs extra.
If the tags are acquired through the HSOV or the auditor's office, there are no extra fees and the tags will be immediately available. Tags through the HSOV cost $16.75, with the extra $.75 going directly to the shelter.
The auditor's office is open 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, Livengood said.
Many dog owners choose to renew licenses online through www.doglicenses.us/OH/Washington.
Livengood said this is the site most counties in Ohio use for dog tag processing. The link can be found through both the auditor's and the HSOV websites.
The license proceeds support the humane society and the issuance of licenses.
