Funding secured for two kayak launches
The Federal Lands Access Program (FLAP) provides funding for projects that provide or improve access to Federal properties such as the 22 islands that make up Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge (NWR). The intent is to encourage citizens to discover the natural treasures that can be discovered on their lands, and to engage in healthy physical exercise.
Ohio River Islands NWR management in cooperation with West Virginia Division of Highways, the City of Williamstown and the City of Vienna submitted proposals for funding of three projects in September 2020 and all three were selected for funding:
Project 1: Development of a road, parking and kayak launch at Spencers Landing in Vienna. $350,000 total project cost.
Project 2: Installation of a kayak launch at the Williamstown boat ramp. Congestion at this ramp has led to unsafe conditions for kayakers using the motorboat ramp, the new kayak launch will be placed a safe distance from the ramp. $51,000 total project cost.
Project 3: Resurface and improvements to Waverly Road in Williamstown from Highland Ave. to the Ohio River Islands NWR visitor center and office. $630,000 total project cost.
The kayak launches will facilitate paddlers engaged in healthy recreational activities and support those inclined to complete the Ohio River Islands NWR Kayak Challenge: fws.gov/refuge/ohio_river_islands/visit/kayak_challenge.html. The Greater Parkersburg Convention & Visitors Bureau provided valuable assistance greaterparkersburg.com.
Construction on all three projects is expected to be underway this summer.
