A 60-year-old Belpre man will spend the next 24 months in prison for sexual battery.

Fred Johnston, of 981 Calder Ridge Road, was sentenced Thursday by Washington County Common Pleas Judge Mark Kerenyi for the assault. He pleaded guilty in December to one count of sexual battery and the state and defense agreed to the 24 month sentence.

The victim was in the courtroom, and her husband spoke on her behalf. “The first time I met Mr. Johnston … it was very clear to me that something was not appropriate there,” the man said. “I was 20 and she was 22 and it was very, very obvious.”

He said later he heard of what happened.

“It was clear he had no remorse and that he just planned to continue what he was doing,” the victim’s husband continued. “That was disgusting.”

Along with the two years in prison, Johnston will be listed as a Tier III sex offender and will have to register in-person with the sheriff’s office every 90 days.

Neither Johnston nor his defense attorney, George Cosenza, had any remarks on his behalf.
