Belpre streets display new colorful flags

BELPRE - Forty new, colorful and artistic banners are lining major streets in Belpre through a project from Beautify Belpre, a volunteer beautification committee in the city.
Banners were designed to spotlight the gazebo, the traditional symbol of the community located in Civitan Park, the area's gathering and recreational center, committee President Jon Neff said. The vibrant orange welcome banners also depict the community's ties to the Ohio River that borders the city.
The banners line Washington Boulevard, Main Street and Farson Street. The committee plans to continue the placement of banners in Civitan and Depot parks and other locations of importance in the city.
Funding for the project was through a grant from the Belpre Area Community Development Foundation.
The volunteer committee was formed following the closing of Belpre in Bloom, a part of the America in Bloom organization.
A 501c3-designated non-profit, Beautify Belpre also provides residents and businesses the opportunity to sponsor baskets and containers of colorful summer flowers lining the walking track in Civitan Park. The committee also recruits volunteer groups to plant and maintain flower beds located at entrances to the city and other focal points.
Besides Neff, officers are Vice-President Jackie Cassady, Secretary/Treasurer Karen Waller, Assistant Treasurer Sandy Elder and Corresponding Secretary Cathy O'Donnell. Other board members include Mike Lorentz, Joyce Lorentz and Tina Nolan.
The committee welcomes volunteers and groups to assist in preparing, planting and maintaining beds around the city. Volunteers can call Cassady at 740-336-3145.
