Prom still a go with special COVID restrictions

With COVID-19 restrictions relaxing, Belpre, Marietta, Fort Frye, Frontier, Warren, Washington and Waterford high schools will be holding proms this year.
Belpre High School's prom will be May 1 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at the Parkersburg Art Center. The advisor of the prom committee is Katie Pence.
Belpre superintendent Jeff Greenley said prom attendants must wear facial coverings everywhere they go. Greenley said the students are thrilled to be having prom this year.
"I think they're just looking forward to spending time with friends as we head closer to graduation," he said.
Belpre High's prom court will be decided on April 7.
Marietta High School's prom will be May 8 from 7:30-10 p.m. at the Marietta High School Gym.
The prom will be limited to 500 students with chaperones enforcing COVID protocols. Students will be able to dance in groups of 10 or less.
Chad Rinard, principal at MHS, said the prom allows students to experience normalcy again.
"It enables them to experience that right of passage that you want juniors and seniors to have," Reinard said. "It also allows them to get dressed up and eat and then come back to dance."
Marietta High School will be having two prom courts this year because of strict COVID regulations last year. The 2020 prom court has been decided while students are still voting for the 2021 prom court.
Fort Frye High School's prom will be May 15 from 7:30-10 p.m. in the high school gym.
Tracey Huck will be one of the prom committee advisors.
Due to COVID Guidelines, there will be temperature checks at the door as well as sanitizer stations. Masks must be worn at all times. Students can stay in groups of 10 or less and sit 6 feet between the groups.
Fort Frye High School's prom court will be released after prom.
Frontier High School's prom will be split into a reception and dance on April 24 at the Marietta Shrine Club.
The reception will take place at the gazebo behind the Marietta Shrine Club from 8-8:30 p.m. and the dance will be from 8:30-11 p.m.
Frontier School's district counselor Holly Cunningham said during the outdoor reception, parents will be invited to take pictures. Only students and staff will be allowed into the dance. There will not be any food, and masks will have to be worn when social distancing cannot be maintained.
Cunningham said the staff was hesitant about going ahead with prom, but they changed their minds as time went on.
"Students are looking forward to it and it will be a good night," Cunningham said.
Warren High School's prom will be May 15 at 8 p.m. at Warren Elementary School.
The prom committee advisors are Cary Farnsworth and Olivia Mullins.
Jeremy Grimm, assistant principal at Warren High School, said students must wear masks during the prom.
Warren High School's prom court will be released after prom.
The Washington County Career Center's prom will be May 7 from 8-11 p.m. at the Broughton Community Building.
Masks will be mandatory as well as social distancing. There will be no food, and beverages will be in a separate area. Only 285 tickets will be sold.
WCCC's prom court voting begins the week before prom.
Waterford High School's prom will be May 8 from 7-10 p.m. at Camp Hervida.
For COVID precautions, there will only be presale tickets and students must fill out a survey that they have not had COVID symptoms. Attendants are required to wear masks, and the prom is outdoors.
The Waterford High School prom court will be announced the day before prom and at prom.
