Committee discusses zoning change for church

Marietta Planning Zoning, Annexation and Housing Committee met on Monday afternoon to discuss concerns for Ordinance No. 282 (20-21).
The ordinance would change the zoning classification of 325 North Seventh St. from a (R-2) single family detached residential district to a (R-3) general residential district.
The property in question is the New Life United Pentecostal Church.
City Law Director Paul G. Bertram III said the planning commission met last Wednesday and recommended the classification change to a (C-3) general retail and service district. Bertram said the variance will be on parking requirements for the building.
"The planning commission's explained that there is going to be a legal document that will be attached to the YMCA building that provides eight or 10 parking spaces that will, that will never go away, that across the street directly in front of the structure," said Bertram.
He said there will be 22 apartments in the former YMCA which has a 70-space parking lot, which leaves 18 positive parking spots for guests or visitors at 325 North Seventh St.
Adam Schwendeman, attorney for Thiesen Brock, spoke to the committee about the parking easement. He said the easement is being finalized, but cannot be granted since the YMCA property is not closed at this time. He said the signing of the easement, which would give 325 North Seventh St. parking, will be signed when the deed of the YMCA is signed.
Bertram said the former church will turn into three apartment units.
A public meeting will be held 6 p.m. Monday at Gilman United Methodist Church at 312 Gilman Ave. for the zoning classification change.
