WATERFORD -- The Wolf Creek Local Schools Board of Education met Monday to conduct district business and to swear in new member Matt Hansell.
Hansell is a Warren High School graduate who has a bachelor's degree in business administration from Ohio Valley University. He has worked in management in the Department of Treasury, Bureau of Fiscal Service for the last 20 years, he said.
Hansell said he saw an opening on the board and wanted to help the school system. He has been living in the district since 2010. He said his children go to school in the district and he thought the district is run very well.
"I just wanted to continue to see that happen," he said. "I just wanted to get involved."
Hansell said he is thankful for the opportunity.
"I look forward to adding value as a board member in any way I can," he said.
Suellen Coleman, Waterford High School principal, gave an update about the school at the meeting. She said they have been having their own version of the Winter Olympics for the past couple of weeks. She said Monday's theme was curling, today's theme is the luge and Wednesday's theme will be figure skating. She said students can be seen wearing plastic gold medals that they have won.
"I really enjoy the fact that they are eager when I come up with some shenanigans like this for them to play with," she said.
Coleman said the College Credit Plus program, which is provided through Washington State Community College, will be changing to two eight-week sessions per semester at the high school. She said WSCC is also making a minimum requirement of six students per class. She said this may affect the classes they are able to offer. The high school is also working with WSCC to provide a four-course career technical pathway in business management. This will help students in getting an associate's degree in business management.
"So I think if kids take advantage of that and they're interested in business management, they can probably get one year of their two-year degree done right here on our campus," said Coleman.
During the Superintendent's update, Doug Baldwin said the administrative team will meet with Southeast Security to see how they can enhance their security system. He said they have been putting pieces of the current system together over a number of years and it is difficult to use.
