Trial underway in suit over death of Elsa Thompson

By From staff reports 1 min read

Opening arguments were offered today in a civil suit over the death of Bird Watcher’s Digest founder Elsa Thompson in a 2019 house fire.

The suit was filed by Thompson’s son, Andy, against American Electric Power, saying the company did not respond to calls about downed power lines in his mother’s yard on Warren Street in Marietta following a thunderstorm. It is alleged the lines caused the fire in which she died that night.

Although Andy Thompson passed away a few months after the suit was filed, his sister Laura is carrying on the litigation.

Two of Elsa Thompson’s neighbors have testified today. More than 40 people are on the witness list for the plaintiffs, including all of her grandchildren.
