VINCENT — Warren Elementary Principal Joseph Oliverio spoke to the Warren Local Schools Board of Education Monday night to express his gratitude to the school district as he is retiring at the end of the school year.
He said five years ago, he was in South Africa and received a call from Superintendent Kyle Newton. He said he came back to Washington County to meet with Newton and his administrative team and “realized this was a very special place.”
“Fast forward to your success with your building facilities, moving the two schools together (Warren and Little Hocking elementaries), moving the two staffs together, opening the building was a very exciting time in my life,” Oliverio said. “I appreciate the opportunity you afforded me five years ago and I’ve always made it a habit in my 39-year education career that the board meeting I’m hired at I attend and the board meeting I either resign or retire, I attend and say thanks for the opportunity.”
He said working with the students, staff and community has been remarkable and he’d treasure the memories.
Bob Allen, chairman of the district operations committee, said new equipment has been purchased for the maintenance of the new facilities. He also said bids for the concession stand/restroom facility came in at about four times the estimated cost, mostly due to inflation. He said he’d like to work with smaller local contractors to hopefully lower some of the costs.
In building 6, inflation is also delaying fixing the gymnasium floor, and it is still planned to move the administration offices over from the facilities on Sweetapple Road.
Newton said he was excited about Monday night’s agenda in regards to the people being hired.
Ashley Skinner was introduced as the new elementary school principal starting this fall. Steve Harold, athletic director, introduced James Peyton as the new athletic director, and Brad Venham as the varsity girls basketball coach.
Graduation will be held at 7 p.m. May 20 at the Dyson Baudo Recreation Center at Marietta College.
