Board of Elections prepares for Tuesday’s primary

With less than a week until Tuesday’s primary election in Washington County, officials said business has picked up a little at the county’s board of election office.
Director Mandy Amos said there are no levies on Tuesday’s ballot, but there will be several fire levies on the November ballot.
“People have wondered if the Belpre levy was going to be on (Tuesday’s ballot), but it’s not,” she said, referring to the proposed Belpre City Schools levy.
The November ballot levies will be for fire departments in Marietta Township, Newport Township, Watertown Township, Warren Township and West Muskingum Township in Oak Grove, Amos said.
New Matamoras residents will get the opportunity to vote on a liquor option for the sale of beer during November’s election.
Amos said so far, it’s been a light turnout, which isn’t unexpected. They’ve had just over 300 in-person or mailed-in votes.
Amos also wanted to remind voters that no voting can take place at the board of elections office on Tuesday. Voters must go to their polling place to cast their ballots.
“We have had a lot of people try to come here to vote,” Amos said. “If they want to stop in and find out where their voting location is, we can tell them.”
Along with not voting at the board’s office at 204 Davis Ave., one polling place will change for just Tuesday’s primary.
Voters who cast their ballots at the Washington County Fairgrounds’ junior fair building will be switching locations to the First Church of the Nazarene, just off Colegate Drive. The change in location is because the junior fair building has no air conditioning and the building will be too warm.
“In November, they’ll go back to the fairgrounds,” Amos said.
The last day to mail out ballots is Saturday. She said they had to have completed applications into the board office by noon that day. Both ballots and applications can be dropped off in the blue box in the parking lot or brought into the office.
Ballots can also be dropped off before 7:30 p.m. on election night, or if it is mailed, it has to be postmarked by Monday, she noted.
