Marietta suspends DORA for Roar

Marietta City Council listened to concerns and questions from several residents Thursday night at the Armory.

One of the concerns brought up by residents was Ordinance 97, which was adopted by the council Thursday.

The legislation temporarily suspends the operation of DORA (Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area) during the Marietta Riverfront Roar this weekend.

Councilman Bill Farnsworth, the chair of the lands, buildings and parks committee, said the ordinance was created at the request of the event for safety concerns.

Those in opposition of the ordinance said it was taking money from small businesses in downtown Marietta as alcohol will be sold from out of town vendors.

The adoption of Ordinance 103 was applauded by residents from Win Beri apartments on Virginia Street, Harmar.

The ordinance requests qualifications and proposals from transportation consultants to conduct a comprehensive transportation study for the city.

An amendment was requested from resident Donna Balachowski to change the word "handicapped" to "disabled", which was adopted before the ordinance was voted on and approved.

Boyer said the council recognized the need for better transportation and they have the ARPA money to perform the needed study.

Fourth Ward Councilman Geoff Schenkel said he was approached almost a year ago by the Win Beri residents about their need for better transportation options. There were concerns about rude CABL bus drivers, as well as the limited hours the bus runs in the afternoons.

"I think it's finally starting to get some traction," Schenkel said.

Ordinance 95 was also adopted, which allows for $12,690 of American Rescue Plan Act funds to pay for the removal of asbestos from the community building at Gold Star Park. Once the asbestos is removed, the building will be demolished and rebuilt.

Streets Committee Chair Susan Boyer said anyone who attends a streets meeting will now need to call and be put on the agenda.

"The system we have now is horribly inefficient," she said.
