Name of victim, additional details released in boating fatality
PARKERSBURG — Additional details have been released in a fatal boating accident that remains under investigation by state and federal authorities.
Jackie Jones, 80, of Lancaster, Ohio, died after a pleasure boat he was on was struck by a barge on July 1, said Capt. Christopher Lester, with the District 6 office of the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.
Two smaller boats were near each other around mile marker 195 on the river between Washington, W.Va., and Little Hocking when the barge came through, traveling south, he said.
The first boat “was having some trouble with the motor, and some other family members came out to assist it,” Lester said.
A thunderstorm struck the area and limited visibility on the river, he said. One boat was towing the other and the barge struck one of them, officials at the scene said.
“That part of it’s all still under investigation,” Lester said.
It was not immediately clear on which boat Jones was a passenger.
Multiple people went into the water after the barge struck the boat.
“Everyone did have life jackets, and there were no other injuries involved,” Lester said.
The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating the involvement of the commercial vessel, while the West Virginia DNR is the lead agency for the recreational boater casualty, said PA3 Riley Perkofski, with public affairs for the Coast Guard’s District 8.
