The Castle's bi-monthly Third Thursday Talk will take place April 20 at 7 p.m.
Join Tony Mayle as he discusses the history of the region related to the abolitionist movement and the involvement that Washington County and Marietta College residents had on the movements for freedom in the 1800s.
He will provide insight into some of the early African American people and communities in the region including local family histories such as the Mayle, Norris and Tabler families.
Mayle will also discuss the terminology used to describe mixed-race people in Appalachia and how racial identity models relate to local identities with People of Color.
Mayle was born and raised in Southeast Ohio. He has been involved in local and regional diversity efforts in the past and present and presented at conferences throughout the country on the topic of diversity and inclusion of all populations.
He has also been interviewed for the Southeast Ohio magazine on the topic of the Southeast Ohio Underground Rail-road connection to the local families and served as a panel member with the International Storytelling Center/Freedom Stories Project discussing the topic of Melungeons and the criminalization of Race. The Castle was built in 1855. The Castle offers a wide array of tours, educational opportunities, and programs.
Tours are available starting in April and many history-related events throughout the year.
Offerings include: local historical mock trials, food history, archaeology, summer camps, school and scout education, cemetery tours, teas and luncheons, wedding and facility rental.
