BELPRE -- Washington County Relay for Life held its annual fundraiser on Saturday at Civitan Park in Belpre. The festivities went from 4 p.m. and lasted until 9:45 p.m. This year's theme was "Pirates of the Cure-ibbean."
There were a total of 18 teams registered for the relay with 400 to 500 people in attendance. About 70 cancer survivors were in the crowd at Saturday's event as well. Relay for Life raised over $26,000 with money still coming in, according to American Cancer Society Senior Development Manager Carmen Hathaway.
"It was a really, really wonderful event. Everybody had a great time," Hathaway said. There were various events including a scavenger hunt, live auction, cornhole and other games. There was also a plethora of concessions as well as a face-painting station. One of the most popular games was the golf ball drop, those tickets were sold out, according to Event Co-Leader Michele George. There were many guests of note at Saturday's event including Belpre's mayor Mike Lorentz. At the event, Lorentz spoke about his struggles with cancer.
"The speakers we had were really bringing it home to people about why we do this and why we fundraise," George said.
