PARKERSBURG -- A group of Energy Express students got a chance to read along with Superintendent Christie Willis Friday as she stopped by Martin Elementary.
Energy Express is funded by WVU Extension Service and AmeriCorps to provide elementary students a safe place to come and work on literacy skills during the summer months.
The children that are enrolled in Energy Express are placed in small groups with a college-age mentor that guides them through various reading and writing activities. Additionally, children are provided two meals a day.
The program currently has 34 children enrolled in Energy Express at Martin Elementary School. This summer there is a second Energy Express site in Wood County at Williamstown Elementary School.
"We are thankful for the outpouring support we have received from our community," said Site Supervisor Ashley Wood.
"That support helps to make our program successful, and provides countless opportunities for our children."
