New Wood County teachers prepare for school year

PARKERSBURG -- New teachers in Wood County are gearing up for the year ahead.
"This whole week is designed for all of our new professional employees, and new teachers," Director of Curriculum and Instruction Ashlee Beatty said. "I call it a 'Getting Started Session.'"
Beatty said the five-day series started with basic orientation, to get initial paperwork and procedures done, and the second day was based on teaching and learning in the classroom, based on the subjects for which the new teachers were hired.
"So they are aware of the tools available to them and they are ready to hit the ground running on the first day of school with their students," Beatty said.
She said 47 new hires are attending the week-long event, along with a few who have either transferred into Wood County for the first time or might be transferring to a new subject.
Beatty said the sessions set for Wednesday through Friday are a three-day series with the West Virginia Department of Education where new educators will learn about classroom management, social and emotional learning, different learning styles and more. She said those who participate would later take part in a book study to help the state department.
Beatty said new teachers would also receive three credit hours from the WVDE for renewal of their teaching certificate.
Beatty said this week was more focused on the district wide part of the orientation process but that each new teacher would be assigned a mentor at their home school to also help with their introduction to things.
"A leader in their their building that can also help them learn the ropes of what takes place in their school," Beatty said.
Beatty said she was still sending out invites for the orientation event as the Board of Education approves new hires and that the district was lucky to have so many new teachers on board.
"It's been great," Beatty said. "Every year we've been really lucky to have the opportunity to hire so many people. To have 47 new employees is pretty awesome."
