Dribbling balls and books; Frontier senior hopes to make impact through criminal justice career

NEW MATAMORAS -- Frontier High School senior Grace Knowlton is looking to level up both her academic and athletic game.

Knowlton is enrolled in Frontier High School and Washington State Community College. She said she has taken several general education requirements such as biology, composition, speech and statistics.

Knowlton said statistics have been surprisingly interesting.

"I'm really interested in stats. I've never been a huge math person. Not that I can't do it, I just don't have an interest. I like how you can gather the information, plug in the numbers and show something," she said.

The professors at Washington State also are helpful, Knowlton said.

"I think the professors are there for you. They are helpful in preparing for your college level classes. They are mindful that you are still in high school and still learning," she said.

Knowlton is a member of Frontier's basketball team and will start her senior season in a few weeks. She has committed to University of Mount Union at Alliance, Ohio, for college basketball. Her major will be criminal justice. She also was interested in Mount Union's national security program, but hasn't decided if she will major or minor in it.

"I chose Mount Union because I liked the atmosphere and their academic programs," she said.

Long term, Knowlton would like to be an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigations. She said she is interested in American and international Law.

"It's the only thing I see myself going into," she said. "I want to be an agent so I can protect people."

At Frontier, Knowlton is a member of the Student Council and participated in homecoming court. The senior class float theme was Barbie in the Homecoming parade.

Knowlton also likes to volunteer. She has participated in the 2nd and 7th reading program where high school students help second graders improve their reading skills.

"We will read to them or help the students read aloud," she said.

Knowlton said she enjoyed seeing the students progress.

"It was great to see them from beginning to end where they couldn't read very fluently to being very proud of themselves," she said.

She also volunteers at Kay's Closet through Newport United Methodist Church. The event is held on the third Saturdays of the month and includes handing out personal and cleaning supplies such as razors, deodorant, soap and laundry detergent.

"We prepare a meal and serve it to visitors. They always need help. I love to go there and fellowship with people," she said.

Knowlton loves to read outside of the classroom. She recently revisited a series from a few years ago.

"I just finished 'Mockingjay' (of the 'Hunger Games' series) a few days ago. I read the first two when I was younger but never got to 'Mockingjay.' So I decided to reread them and included it."

Knowlton said she likes the fantasy genre and has recently enjoyed the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series.
