Marietta College Leadership students are taking the lead in 2023 on the Make A Difference Day Tree Planting Project and a variety of organizations and individuals are joining their efforts, according to a press release from the project's organizer..
Plans to plant 50 trees in October through Oct. 28, which is Make a Difference Day, is a cooperative effort by Friends of the River Trail, Marietta Rowing and Cycling Club, Blue Rock Station Food Forest Garden, Marietta Tree Commission members, Marietta College Leadership program students, plus families and individuals from throughout Washington and Wood counties.
Volunteers, including children, can still participate by gathering at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Indian Acres parking lot for registration and team assignments. For more information, contact Roger Kalter at 740-525-1833, rogerkalter1@gmail.com; or Colin Campagne, 740-649-6596.
Memorial trees are being planted to recognize community members past and present who have dedicated their lives to civic improvements.
"The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The next best time is today," said Roger G. Kalter, who is overseeing the project. To date, Kalter said, he has overseen hundreds of tree plantings along the river trail and other sites around Marietta.
Among those being honored this year for community service are Brad Bond, Perl Totman, Elin Jones, Jean Freeze Nuss, Paul and Judy Lewis, Cody Henderhan, Peter and Karen Prigge, George and Gwen Banzinger, Kittie and John Clark, Jim Grecni and Debra Miller, Kim and Diane McMichael, Jimy, Lyndsey and Birdie Bennett, Darryl and Cynthia Ting, Fred and Josh Smith, Rebecca Phillips, Jack and Mary Haessly, Dave and Wendy Erb, Richard Lancaster, Maxine Barnett and Jay and Annie Warmke.
Donations to help pay for the trees may be made to the Mildred E. and Louis B. Kalter Humanitarian River Trail Maintenance Fund at the Marietta Community Foundation, 100 Putnam St., Marietta, Ohio 45750.
Marietta has been a Tree City USA for 44 years, but there have been no city plantings in two years, according to Kalter. A mountain ash tree was planted in Knox Park in 2022 by the First Unitarian Universalist Society of Marietta Homecoming team and two others were planted this year by Girl Scouts of Troop 10100 at Fort Street Pollinator Habitat and next to Flanders Field.
