VIENNA -- Costumed beings, human and canine alike, flocked to the first annual Trick or Treat for Dogs at Jackson Park Saturday.
The event was sponsored by the City of Vienna, Vienna Parks Department, and Crazy Bone Pet Spa in Parkersburg.
Community members brought their dogs in costume for a costume contest where approximately fifty dogs were brought before a panel of judges, including Brett Lyons, owner of Crazy Bone and Missy Wilcox, Mrs. Holly Days. The contest had three categories: Funny, Cute, and Scary. They also had a Best Overall Category. Gift baskets for all four winners were donated by Crazy Bone.
Linda Kern, event planner for the City of Vienna, said she and volunteer Madelyn Goff put together goody bags of treats and tennis balls for the attendees. These items were also donated by Crazy Bone.
"[The City of Vienna] approached us to participate in this event," Lyons said. "This is a good way to give back to the community."
Kern said the city had attempted to do a similar event in 2018 or 2019 but it got rained out.
"There's only so much warmth you can get in late October," she said,
Kern said she was pleased with the turnout and that the previous five months of planning were worth it.
"It was way beyond my expectations. Everybody came from all over. I'm just so glad," she said.
Kern said the event is also a way to show Jackson Park's dog park facilities to the community. The park includes a space for both large and small dogs.
"I'm so happy to show off our dog park to our community. We've been a bunch of places and none are better than ours," she said.
The winners of the costume contest were as follows: Cute was won by Betsy, dressed as a witch. Her owner is Nina Thronton of Parkersburg. Scary was won by Zola, dressed as Chucky. They are owned by Chase and Megan Marshall of Vienna. Funny was won by Ryder, dressed as a Ghostbuster along with his owner Mitchell McCrady of New Martinsville, W.Va. The best overall was Alice, dressed as a bat, owned by Adrienne Burge of Davisville, W.Va.
