Two local high school marching bands performed at the Ohio Music Education Association State Marching Band Finals and received their ratings over the weekend.

Belpre High School and Marietta High School bands traveled to Medina High School in Medina Saturday to perform in front of a panel of judges and receive a rating based on their performance.

Bands are rated on a Roman numeral scale from I to V, with I-Superior being the highest.

Belpre performed its show “Through The Clouds” at 4:45 p.m. It was broken up into three movements: Blue Skies, The Storm, and The Rainbow.

“Saturday felt right,” senior Connor Elder said. “It dawned on everyone that that was the last performance of the season and we needed to leave everything on the field. I’m so proud of everyone.”

Marietta followed at 5:30 p.m. with its show “Starry, Starry Night,” based on the painting of the same name by Vincent Van Gogh.

Ratings were presented at 6:30 p.m. Members of each band waited on the field for their score to be announced.

Belpre sent down its five seniors: Alexander Mason, Ryan Lane, Paige Lockhart, Elder and Olivia Hall.

“It was only a couple minutes, but it felt a lot longer,” Elder said. “We were standing there talking, hoping to get a I. When the announcer said, `Belpre High School, I,’ we could barely keep it together to do a salute, we were so excited.”

Elder said he also noticed the excitement from both Belpre and Marietta’s fans when their score and when Marietta’s rating of II or Excellent was announced a few minutes later.

“They cheered for us when our score was announced and we cheered for them when theirs was announced,” he said.
