MARIETTA – Marietta and the community Saturday celebrated Veterans Day with the annual parade.

The parade started at Fourth and Hart streets to Fourth Street to Putnam Street to Front Street where it ended at Muskingum Park. Engraved bricks were installed in the Veteran’s Walkway besides the Armory at 11 a.m. after the parade, according to City Councilman Harley Noland.

American Flags and Poles was at the beginning of the parade on Saturday. With the owners, Jim and Sylvi Caporale, was a float made to look like a sternwheeler called the Piano Doctor with a calliope played by Bill White.

Jim Caporale said he and his wife have been a part of Marietta’s parades since they started their business 27 years ago. Caporale also said that they started using the float and calliope around 10 years ago when they first got the instrument.

Behind the Caporales were the Sons of the American Revolution and local veterans. They carried two American flags, one with Sons of the American Revolution and other participating organizations written on it, and Ohio’s state flag.

Instead of throwing candy, the Veterans of Foreign Wars threw dog tags to better commemorate veterans. The local chapter of the Civil Air Patrol also made an appearance at Saturday’s parade.

Marietta High School’s Wall of Sound marching band performed at the parade. The Wall of Sound recently got a 2 rating (on a scale of one to five, one being the best) at this year’s state competition. This was the first time the Wall of Sound made it to the state competition in several years.

Also at the parade was a long procession of antique tractors of different colors, shapes and makes. After the tractors, a procession of Jeeps from the Ohio Valley Jeep Club followed, all decorated for Veteran’s Day.

The parade ended with engines from local fire departments and recently re-elected Mayor Josh Schlicher.
