Highmark foundation awards grants to Wood County groups

PARKERSBURG -- Two programs in Wood County will benefit from the Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health.

The Children's Home Society of West Virginia and the Wood County Society are among the nine grants awarded to groups and agencies in the state during the fourth quarter of the year.

The grants for the year total about half a million dollars to nonprofit organizations.

The grants help fund programs and initiatives addressing oral health, community health and family health initiatives to benefit West Virginia individuals, families and communities.

The $26,000 grant to the Children's Home Society will be used for Parkersburg Program needs, Highmark said.

The $22,000 grant to the Wood County Society will finance expansion of vital services in the Mid-Ohio Valley.

"We are proud to support these nonprofit organizations that are working tirelessly in the communities throughout the state day in and day out," Cathy McAlister, executive director of the Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health, said.

"Their hands-on efforts help move the needle to improve the health and wellbeing of our neighbors, and we greatly appreciate their commitment to community."

Other grants went to the: Capital City Give Kids a Smile program for the Capital City Give Kids A Smile Day 2024; Golden Girl Group Home for the family kitchen and food pantry Program; Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for the Breaking Barriers in the Mountain State Program; the Mountaineer Food Bank for its Veterans Table Feeding Program; University Physicians and Surgeons for the Caring for Smiles of Those Who Served Dental Event; The Children's Charity for mobility and communication programs; and the West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities Circle of Vision Scholarship Program.

The Charitable Fund has awarded more than $5 million in grants to more than 100 organizations since its launch in 2021.

To date, these grants support programs that address Social Determinants of Health, Oral Health, Substance Use Disorder, Community Health and Family Health.

The Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health's mission is to improve the health, well-being and quality of life in all 55 counties in West Virginia.

The Highmark West Virginia Charitable Fund for Health strives to support programs that impact multiple counties.

More than 100 grants have been awarded since the charitable fund began in 2021.
