Marietta BOE hires new director of operations

By Kristen Hainkel 2 min read

Marietta City Schools Board of Education discussed a new academic portion of their district strategic plan and hired a new director of operations during Monday's meeting.

To start, board president Sam Tuten handed out recognition plaques to two retirees.

First, he recognized board member Bill Hutchinson. Hutchinson served on the board for 14 years and is a lifelong resident of Marietta.

"It's been a wonderful time serving on the board. I hope things keep falling in place," he said. "I can't think of anywhere else I would rather be."

The second person Tuten recognized is outgoing director of operations Darrell Prim. Prim has worked for the district for 32 years.

"I never planned to stay this long. I thought it was a stepping stone. But the longer I stayed, the more I liked it," he said.

Superintendent Brad Silvus spoke about a portion of the district's overall strategic plan called the Path to 95%-Tiger Guarantees, which lays out goals for improvement in academic goals.

"We have a resolution to adopt this, and this is our call moving forward," he said.

Silvus said the plan is being introduced to teachers and administrators and asking how they are doing in the process.

Director of Curriculum Tim Fleming said he was excited about the Path to 95% document.

"This can sit in front of a parent and they can say, `if my student goes to Marietta City Schools, this is what the guarantee is. Every student. No exceptions,'"

The board later passed the document unanimously.

Silvus said the district had a new director of operations to hire, Dash McNeal. His 31 month contract will start effective Jan. 1, 2024.

"(McNeal) has experience with facilities, he is high energy, very organized, good with technology, and a good person to meet with the public," Silvus said.

"I had a chance to play a role in both the first and second rounds of interviews," board member Cody Parman said. "We had a lot of good candidates. I was glad to participate to see how it boiled down. I think Dash will fit this position incredibly well."
