Brazell-Hill selected for MLK Commission
Governor Mike DeWine has appointed Heather Brazell-Hill, of Malta/Morgan County, to serve on The Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission and with the recommendation from Ronald Todd, from Governor DeWine’s office, the Frederick Douglass Foundation has appointed Ms. Brazell-Hill to serve as the ambassador for Athens, Morgan, Muskingum, Perry and Washington Counties.
Brazel Hill’s extensive background includes notable achievements and a deep-seated commitment to community development. Her influence extends across various sectors. As the first person of color elected in Morgan County, Brazell Hill’s trailblazing career is marked by her roles in education, public service, and community activism.
She holds a bachelor’s degree in marketing and business from Ohio University, along with a certificate in deaf studies and American Sign Language from Columbus State Community College. Since becoming a small business owner in 2001, Brazel Hill has served on the Morgan Local school board, including positions as vice-president and president, and actively engaged in the Black Caucus of Ohio School Board Members.
Her dedication to service is further highlighted by her work with the Morgan Co. Habitat for Humanity, the MLK Scholarship Fund, and her support for various educational and social initiatives, both locally and internationally. She has been recognized for her contributions with a nomination for induction into the Ohio Civil Rights Hall of Fame and receiving the Muskingum Co. MLK Honor Award.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Brazell Hill is a devoted family person, celebrating over 30 years of marriage to Darrin Hill and raising three children along with numerous foster children. Her commitment to youth development, education, and service is evident in her continuous support for Ohio’s foster children and her advocacy for suicide prevention and educational improvement. The Frederick Douglass Foundation Ohio and the Martin Luther King Holiday Commission warmly welcomes Heather Brazell Hill to their leadership teams, confident that her passion, experience, and dedication will greatly enhance their mission and contribute to meaningful education in the community.
The Ohio Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission is a statewide advocate of Dr. King’s principles of nonviolence. The Commission strives to carry out Dr. King’s dream of service to others throughout the entire year through various events. The Commission was established in 1985 by executive order. Today, the DAS Administrative Support Division provides support to the Commission.
