The Institute for Learning in Retirement (ILR) at Marietta College has seven new classes in its Winter 2024 lineup. Classes are held at Marietta College in Thomas Hall, Room 124, and two are available via Zoom. For complete information and to register online, go to www.marietta.edu/ilr.
Stress R Us is an 8-week course that will meet on Mondays beginning Jan. 15. Greeley Miklashek, MD, will summarize his lifelong learning and experience. He traces the roots of all human diseases to one common source - our overactive stress responses and the triggers driving it. The class explores what "stress" is, what triggers it, its role in health and disease causation, stress management and disease prevention.
Chemistry in our National Parks is an 8-week course on Wednesdays beginning Jan. 17. In this course Marietta College Professor Kevin Pate will teach the basics of chemistry using our country's national parks and monuments as illustrations of various chemical phenomena. Topics include atomic and molecular structure, states of matter, acids and bases, chemical reactions, thermodynamics and kinetics. Don't let the terms frighten you. This class is for everyone.
Beginners Hand sewing is a 4-week class on Thursdays beginning Feb. 18. Caroline Frey Mounier-vehier, a life-long fabric artist, will offer an introduction to hand sewing, patchwork, and quilting. Class members will create a lavender sachet/mini cushion using a piecing technique and an appliqué technique. ump in for a fun and creative class, and have something to show for it! A complete kit will be available for purchase ($28) on the first day of class.
Money Matters is a 4-week course on Fridays beginning Feb. 19. In this course Neil Parsons, Financial Advisor at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC, will explore finances in retirement.
A broad discussion of the challenges of how to handle one's finances in retirement years will be covered, as well as the financial challenges unique to the senior years. This course is offered via Zoom as well as in person.
A second set of 4-week classes will begin on Feb. 13. These classes include Vikings, Saint Brendan, and Other Earlier Possible Explorers of North America led by Jim Moon on Tuesdays (Zoom option available); Wines of West Virginia led by grape farmer and winemaker Craig Bandy on Thursdays; and Music of the 70's, presented by retired Marietta College professor Ed Osborne on Fridays.

The Institute for Learning in Retirement is a community-based organization of people, who share a love of learning. At its heart is an academic program designed by its members to suit their interest and taught by knowledgeable instructors.
All are welcome. The cost of courses range from $15 for a 4-week course to $30 for an 8-week course.
