Special election announced for Johnson’s spot
COLUMBUS — A special election schedule to finish the congressional term of a congressman who will resign to become president of Youngstown State University was announced Friday by the governor of Ohio.
In November, U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson was offered and accepted the job at Youngstown State.
Johnson, who lived in Marietta, will resign from the U.S. House of Representatives 6th District in Ohio that includes Washington County on Jan. 21, sooner than previously announced, and will become president of the college on Jan. 22.
Gov. Mike DeWine said Friday the special election dates to fill the upcoming vacancy will include a partisan primary on March 19 and the general election occurring on June 11.
Johnson formally communicated with the governor his resignation effective Jan. 21 at the end of the day. The formal communication of the resignation allows the governor to call the special election and issue a Writ of Election.

¯ Jan. 24: The Mahoning County Board of Elections must certify candidates who will appear on the special primary ballot to Boards of Elections in Washington, Noble, Monroe, Belmont, Harrison, Jefferson, Carroll, Tuscarawas, Stark and Columbiana counties.
