Commissioners talk OSU Extension

Washington County commissioners talked about past projects and upcoming events at the Ohio State University Washington County Extension Office on Thursday.
OSU Washington County Extension Area Leader Amanda Bohlen spoke with commissioners about updates at the extension office. Bohlen said the extension office had a workshop about whitetail deer in the fall of 2023. At the workshop they discussed venison recipes including ground venison philly cheese steaks, preservation of venison, land usage, and even had a processor show how to cut up a deer.
"It went extremely well," Bohlen said of the workshop.
According to Bohlen, the extension office will offer Food Safety Training and Certification Classes for different levels. They offer classes at the Person-In-Charge level and the Manager level.
The manager level class is very intense and lasts from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bohlen said.
She said that managers are required to take food safety classes. People can take the courses online, but if they do they can't get the health department food certification they need, they would have to get it on their own. If people do the in-person class offered by the extension office they can get that certification from taking the class.
The extension office is also offering a class on successful co-parenting, which is required by courts if a couple is getting divorced and has a child under the age of 18.
The class is offered on the second Monday of the month from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m, Bohlen said.
Bohlen let the commissioners know that the extension office is working on getting a new Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) education program assistant hired. The job was advertised on their website and is now closed.
She said there were 13 applicants and she is working on getting interviews set up for the position.
According to Bohlen, the extension office will host a 4-H Open House at the Washington County Junior Fair Building on March 2 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. projects they have worked on during the open house.
Bohlen said the Washington County 4-H Endowment Dinner and Auction is coming up on April 13. It is at the Washington County Junior Fair Building and starts at 5 p.m. Tickets are $30.
Bohlen also said that the extension office is working with the Washington County Family and Children Council on a No Wrong Door Lunch & Learn in May.
She said they will teach people about the extension office and what they do.
According to the Washington County Family and Children Council website, the No Wrong Door philosophy ensures that when people need help they are connected to desired services regardless of which agency they contact.
No Wrong Door agencies receive education on resources available and customer service training so that staff and clients can have streamlined information about all available supports and services.
