History Center conducts regional meetings

2 min read

The Southeast Ohio History Center has been conducting regional meetings with groups and organizations representing natural and cultural heritage sites in the region.

Divided into eastern, central, and western sectors of Southeast Ohio, the groups are in the process of their third meeting where they are discussing ways to collaborate with each other in training and marketing.

Discussions have centered on the establishment of heritage trails through the region and ways the organizations can work together to create a louder voice for historic preservation in the region where Ohio began. Meetings have been held at the Maddog Center for Welsh Studies in Rio Grande, the Lillian Jones Museum in Jackson, the Hocking County Historical Society in Logan, Campus Martius Museum in Marietta, the McConnelsville Opera House in Morgan County, Shade Community Center in Athens County, and the Putnam House in Zanesville. More than 50 heritage organizations in Southeast Oho have been participating in these conversations.

Many museums and heritage organizations are struggling with small budgets, volunteer staffing, and growing challenges with their collections and their buildings.

Regional gatherings are seeking ways to work collaboratively to address those important issues while they also work to share stories of the region that represent populations spanning the area's county lines.

The endeavor is being spearheaded by Southeast Ohio History Center volunteer, Maryalice Turner of Millfield, Oh.
