Marietta City Council Employee Relations and Finance committees met briefly Monday evening to discuss seasonal labor at the Marietta Harbor, vacation payouts, and held an executive session to discuss the financial viability of the city.
The two committees discussed hiring the annual JFS (Job and Family Services) laborers that they hired for last year's Harbor work.
"I believed it saved the city money last year using these same workers," said Budget Director Mitch Dimmerling. "We can increase the rate (of pay) and reduce the number of employees we need as we did last year."
Law Director Paul Bertram stated that minimum wage has changed since last year, mentioning that they paid the employees to work on the Harbor $15 an hour. City auditor Sherri Hess said that no matter what the pay rate is, the city will get reimbursed.
Employee Relations and Council Member At-Large Cassidi Shoaf finished discussion of seasonal labor at the Harbor making plans to maintain their two labor positions and figurng out the season for the labor which will roughly be around April 1 to Oct. 31.
The two committees also met to discuss vacation payout for a member of the Teamsters 637 Local Union. Mike Dickerson, Secretary and Treasurer of Teamsters 637, spoke on behalf of a worker who they said is owed money according to the Teamsters and City's contract due to vacation hour rollover.
"There is an employee, Joe Finkel, who has 1,864 hours of vacation to which you owe money to," said Dickerson. "There were four city employees that you paid out their differences to.
You owe Mr. Finkel his money."
Shoaf and Bertram both stated that those four workers were under city contract and not Teamsters contract, and that per city ordinance, they were paid their differences. Dickerson stated that the city would be discussing the issue with the Teamsters lawyer as well.
The committees ended their meeting with an executive session as to which no legislation came about.
Planning, Zoning, Annexation, and Housing, Water and Sewer, Lands, Buildings and Parks, and Streets committees will meet respectively starting from 5:15 p.m. at 304 Putnam Street today.
