Two new symbols depicting various aspects of Marietta’s history rose up the flagpole Thursday morning.

Fort Harmar Heritage Group, a local group of historians, debuted two new flags related to Fort Harmar’s history at Harmar Point at the 300 block of Fort Street.

The first was a recreation of an American flag that would flown over Fort Harmar in 1785. The second one is a new design created with elements of Fort Harmar’s history by local artist Christina Ullman.

“This is the first time this has happened and it will never happen again,” Fort Harmar Heritage Group member Tom Fenton said. “This is a new symbol of the courage that our soldiers displayed while serving in Fort Harmar.”

Sons of the American Revolution member Caleb Yost and Douglas Pettit, Chapter President, hoisted both flags up the pole. Then, local elementary students lead attendees in the Pledge of Allegiance.

“We read the story of Fort Harmar the night before,” said Jenni Zhang, a parent of Elina Swartz, one of the students in the crowd. “She was excited to see the mayor and the flag.”

Mayor Josh Schlicher said there’s interest in the historical significance in Marietta and acknowledged efforts by Sons of American Revolution and Fort Harmar Heritage Group to preserve the landmarks surrounding it.

“This new Fort Harmar Flag is another resource to help us tell this story of what happened here along the banks of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers,” Scott Britton, director of the Castle Museum, said.

Starting at $2.99/week.
