Williamstown City Council talks water, sewer rate increase

WILLIAMSTOWN - Williamstown City Council heard an update regarding a planned increase for the city's water and sewer rates at Tuesday's meeting.
City Attorney Blaire Hudson said she spoke with a representative of the Public Service Commission of West Virginia in Charleston regarding moving forward with a proposed 3% to 5% increase on the city's water and sewer rates.
Mayor Paul Jordan said after the meeting that a change in state rules regarding rate increases could mean the city would be charged an additional fee which would be passed on to the customers. However, Hudson said the city could qualify for an exception because of its population size, but that would have to be confirmed with the PSC's legal department.
"We're moving forward, but I have to wait for either legal or the spokesperson to get back to me," she said.
Mayor Paul Jordan said the city last approved a 3% increase in 2020.
Councilman Shane King asked the council to approve sending specifications for managing the city's pool out to bid. The council voted unanimously to do so.
"It's our pool, but an outside company does the managing," King said.
The council voted unanimously to become a participating employer in the West Virginia Municipal Police Officers and Firefighters Retirement System. This is a statewide retirement network to which a police officer or firefighter can carry over their existing retirement benefits.
The council also reappointed Linda Meyers to the Planning Commission and reappointed Jason Buttrey and Rex Bush to the Board of Zoning Appeals.
