Ravenswood plant receiving up to $75M in federal funds

RAVENSWOOD - Constellium's aluminum rolled products facility in Ravenswood could receive up to $75 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Inflation Reduction Act funding, the company announced today.

The U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations selected the facility to begin award negotiations with the intent of helping to fund implementation of low-to-no-emissions technologies, a release from Constellium said. This would support the decarbonization of the casthouses, the plant's most energy intensive operation, it said.

The funding would go toward installation of low-emissions SmartMelt furnaces that can operate using a range of fuels, including clean hydrogen, paving the way toward a zero-carbon casthouse, the release said. It is also expected to help maximize recycled scrap intake and improve worker safety with the introduction of a hands-free casting process.

Ravenswood and surrounding communities would also benefit from construction of a new training and wellness center for all employees and on-site child care, the release said.
